Infrared Thermography (IRT), is a process where a thermal camera captures and creates an image of an object by using infrared radiation emitted from the object . What is Thermography? Thermography or thermal imaging, detects heating concentrations or heat leak sources in electrical equipment. Thus, thermography detects infrared energy emitted by an electrical circuit or an electrical part through which an electrical current passes (wire, cable, transformer, contactor, electrical motor, breaker, etc.) This infrared energy is then converted into temperature. The higher the temperature of the equipment through which an electrical current passes, the higher the level of infrared detection will be. Thermography makes it possible to see one's environment with or without visible illumination. The amount of radiation emitted by an object increases with temperature; therefore, thermography allows one to see variations in temperature. When viewed through a thermal imaging camera, warm objects stand out well against cooler backgrounds;
Infrared Thermography Inspection CLO2 uses two main types of inspections for building thermography – Qualitative and Quantitative. Survey for Infrared Electrical inspection of equipment pieces, electrical meters and panels. Electric Thermographic Inspection Visual Electrical Inspection Infrared Thermographic Report Qualitative Inspections do not involve any formal recording of temperatures. Instead they relate to the analysis of thermal images to determine whether defects or anomalies are present in the property being inspected. Application of qualitative thermal imaging involve, Condition Assessment, Condition Monitoring, Quality Assurance, Forensic Investigations, and Building Sciences.
Quantitative Inspections involve recording temperatures, and as such the requirements for the surveyor and their thermographic competency are much higher. This is because a thermal imaging camera only assesses the total intensity of thermal radiation it receives, which not only comes from the intended target such as a wall, ceiling , but also from a number of other environmental sources, like electrical panels. Training and certification is essential should a surveyor wish to undertake any form of quantitative inspection. Our CLO2 Thermography Inspectors are fully trained and certified.
What Thermography CAN do: Detect wet insulation. Detect heat loss and inefficiencies in a building. Find leaks in roofs, which may be invisible to the naked eye. Determine the status of argon filled windows and if they need replacing. Find insect nests (ants, wasps etc.). Find animal dwellings (squirrels, racoons etc.). Detect electrical problems not seen by the naked eye. Degradation of the building structure. What thermography CANNOT do: Find the source of a water leak Detect mold or mildew. X-RAY vision behind walls like in the movies.
Detecting Abnormal Heating Sources and Preventing Accidents Electrical systems are the cause of many accidents and one must insure that electrical equipment is always in good state. Many fires have been caused by electrical failures from old control panels where abnormal heating sources could have been detected via thermography. On a smaller scale, electrical failures that can be detected by thermography may cause power failures or affect the efficiency of manufacturing equipment. Those problems can all be avoided or predicted with regular thermography inspection. Since heating is often responsible for electrical circuit problems, inspecting control panels and electrical equipment (such as electric motors) is recommended to spot heating sources that could require the intervention of an electrician or service field technician. Better be safe than sorry. Thermography is even recommended by insurance companies among other activities of preventive maintenance. The thermography technicians of CLO2 are level 2 certified.
